SAN ANGELO –The 90 San Angelo community partners’ co-hosts comprised of superheroes—Iron Man, Spiderman- Noir, the Real West Texas Ghostbusters, Andy Armadillo, H-E-B Buddy, Whataguy, also Angelo State University mascots: Mascots – Bella and Roscoe, came to the rescue to entertain a full house of families with children at the 3rd Annual San Angelo READS! & United We Read Back-to-School Pop-Up.
The sixth annual, popular SA READS Back-2-School community providers assisted in handing out approximately 2,100 backpacks, along with school supplies consisting of boxes of crayons, composition books, highlighters, glue, and the Black Lagon reading books. The Lagon reading book series was published between 1993, and 2007. The popular children’s book franchise was created by Mike Thaler. The stories combine school life with imaginative monsters, bullies, and exaggerated fears. The main character, Hubie Brown is a worry-prone student who attends Hardy Elementary School.
Another fictional children’s favorite character who made his appearance was Andy Armadillo, the beloved Texas Roadhouse mascot.
Among the 90 community partners were:
The YMCA, Crunch Fitness, West Texas Counseling & Guidance, Kappa Delta Pi / ASU College of Education, also the Central High School Cheerleaders Lake View High School Cheerleaders, etc.
Among the plethora of games, and activities included:
Spinning the multi-colored wheel for free prizes such as a backpack, a coozie, water bottle
Help with 2026–2027 school registration
Immunization clinic
Vehicle Exploration
The 2,100 backpacks made available to students, came from the support of United We Read, Atmos Energy and a grant from the Texas Trust Gives Foundation.
United Way of the Concho Valley also donated 1,000 free hot dogs for families, and their children.
The SA READS Back-2-School Pop-up was held on Friday, July 31, 2026 from 11 a.m. -1 p.m. at the First Financial Pavilion, 4400 Grape Creek Rd.
